How many hours a power station runs the devices you need in an outage.

The short answer for a CPAP

13.1 hours

Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2. The smallest in-stock battery with measured capacity that lasts a full night on a CPAP. 890Wh measured in an independent test.

Which power station runs a CPAP through an outage?

16 power stations sold in the US, ranked by hours on a ResMed AirSense 11. 11 have capacity measured by an independent tester. The other 5 are estimates from the maker's rating.

These are the watts each device uses, from the makers' sheets and public energy data. Fridges and freezers show a daily average, since the compressor cycles. Sump pump figures and every start figure show volts × maker amps, an upper bound. Hours depend on the power station, so we rank 1 device at a time. CPAP is ranked. The refrigerator is next.

Motors pull far more for a moment at start. A Liberty 287 sump pump can hit 2,645W and a 1/2 HP well pump 7,406W, more than most portable power stations can supply. Well pumps and furnaces are hardwired: an electrician fits the transfer switch, and never backfeed a house. CPAP and oxygen concentrators: no power station here switches over in 0 ms, so none is a medical UPS. Check with your equipment supplier.

If the power cuts at 10 pm

Hours at ResMed's 56.1W typical draw, for the 11 power stations with measured capacity. Each bar runs from the shortest-running to the longest-running unit of that size.

Why measured capacity matters

You get less out of a battery than the number on the box. The 11 measured units here gave back 78 to 93% of their rating, with a middle value of 86%. So we rank on what testers drew from each unit, and mark the rest as estimates.
